WebDezign secrets revealed...  banners

A well designed web site is necessary but not enough for a successful presence on the Internet. Why? Because it needs promotion. Some Internet marketers would say banner promotion is not effective any more. We have a different opinion. Banner advertising is still a good approach to draw people's attention to your web site.
If it wasn't effective any more there wouldn't be so many banner exchange, click-thru's, affiliate, associate, referral,... and so on programs. They all work with banners. If it wasn't so important then why people started to measure traffic and efficiency with CTR's, CPM's and CPV's.
Because every click on the banner costs money. And as more clicks your banners generate, as more valuable your web site is becoming. People will be more willing to click on your banners when the banners are well designed, smart, attractive, tempting, provocative or whatever you call it. So when you start to promote your web site, make it professional.

What is an exposure?
Impressions (exposures) is the
number of times an ad banner is
displayed. If you host banner ads
on your page, everytime someone
visits it you produce an impression
(exposure) of that banner. The
same is when your banner is
displayed with other pages. As
many times they are visited as
more impressiones you get.

What is a hit?
Hits is the number of times your
page was visited. Sīmetimes it is
required the page to be completely
loaded in the visitor's browser to be
counted as a hit.

What is a credit?
This may vary from programme to
programme. Usually it is used to
measure generally your results -
you get credits when your site
generates some form of adverti-
sing of the sponsors. Some prog-
rammes measure the hits, the
impressions or even the sells with
credits. For instance you can get
0.5 credits per impression, 3 cre-
dits per hit, 500 credits per sell,
etc. Some programmes may offer
you to spend your credits for ad-
ditional promotion of your web
site instead of money.

What is a "CTR"?
It stands for click-through ratio.
This is the ratio hits/impressions.
It depends mostly on the banner
design, its size and placement on
the page, the visitors' interest etc.

What is a "CPM"?
This is the price per 1000
impressions.

What is an affiliate program?
(affiliate, associate, referral,
retailer, partner, MLM, click-thru)

They all are some kind of arrange-
ments between advertisers and web
page owners willing to place links or
banners on their pages and get paid
for this. There are many different
types of programmes with many
specific features. There is no com-
mon rule how to find out the most
profitable one for you. It depends on
what kind of visitors you have and
what they could more likely be at-
tracted by. So it's obvious that not
always the biggest percent and
commissions offered will bring the
highest income for you. According
to us basically there are 3 types of
programmes:

a. Programmes that pay per click.
They pay you everytime when your
visitor clicks on their ad banner on
your page and visits their site. No
sells are required.

b. Programmes that pay commis-
sion fees when a given product or
service is being sold from your
page. They could be MLM as well.

c. Programmes that promote your
site placing your ad banner on other
pages (other means for promotion
are also possible) and require you
too to place their ad banners on
your page.

What is a "CPV"?
It stands for cost per visitor.
CPV = CPM / (CTR * 1000)

Is there any standard for banner size?
There are no standards for banner size ( just like most of the things on
the Internet ). However there are some more frequently used banners
and their size is shown below. The size is measured in pixels and the
banners look bigger or smaller when displayed with different screen resolution.

Make sure you have at least two different size banners. As more banners you offer as more people will be willing to place a banner of yours on their pages. The variety of banners will make it easier for your partners to choose one that best fits their site's style and composition.
