Struma /goitre/ - diffused or nodal increase of thyroid gland. Insufficient administration of iodine is the most often reason in children. Other factors influence too – bad living conditions, heavy physical labour, uniform nutrition. Usually no deviation in thyroid gland function is noticed.  The most severe and dangerous complication of goitre is the malignant degeneration. Big size of struma could provoke compression of trachea and esophagus. the clinical symptoms are cough, asthma, swallowing disorders. Treatment of diffused struma in childhood is by iodine preparations. Nodous struma is subject to surgical treatment.
